Summer PD: Getting Ready for an AI-Powered School Year

Summer is the one stretch of the school year when teachers have the mental space to genuinely explore new tools and approaches without the pressure of an active classroom. That makes it the ideal time to build familiarity with AI tools you want to use when students arrive in September. The teachers who feel most confident using AI in their classrooms during the year are almost always the ones who spent time with the tools before the year started — not necessarily learning everything, but reducing the initial friction enough that the tools feel useful rather than burdensome when things get busy.
A practical summer AI prep approach covers four areas. First, tool selection: identify one or two specific tools you want to integrate into your practice, rather than trying to learn everything at once. Depth with one tool beats surface familiarity with five. Second, workflow design: decide specifically when and how you will use each tool during your regular planning and grading process. The teachers who successfully adopt AI tools have a clear answer to when it fits into their week. The ones who do not usually treat tool use as something to figure out as they go, which means it rarely happens consistently. Third, sample creation: use the summer to generate a small library of materials — lesson plans, worksheets, assessment items — that you can use or modify in September. Starting the year with a seed library changes the first few weeks from overwhelming to manageable. Fourth, peer connection: if colleagues at your school are also exploring AI tools, summer is the time to share what you are discovering, compare approaches, and identify where you might collaborate on shared resources.
The goal is not to become an AI expert before September. It is to arrive at the start of the year with enough confidence and preparation that adding AI tools to your practice feels like an upgrade rather than an additional burden. That threshold is closer than most teachers expect — often achievable in just a few focused hours over the summer.
