Students taking a quiz, and seeing results

How students take a published quiz, how to grade it, release grades, and where you see every attempt.

    Updated October 20, 2026

Once a quiz is published, students in that class see it under Quizzes in their portal. They can Take Quiz Online, one question at a time with a timer if you set one, or Upload Your Answers as a photo, PDF or document.

Warning:Online quizzes should be finished in one go. If a student closes the page or refreshes, their progress is lost.

    Grading

Submitted quizzes wait for you to grade them. Open the quiz's menu and choose View Results, then click AI Grade on an attempt, or Grade All with AI. On an attempt that's already graded the button says Grade again and asks first, because a new AI grade replaces yours, including your changes. Multiple choice, true/false, fill-in-the-blank, matching and ordering questions are marked against your answers. Short answers are scored by AI with a short comment.

Note:AI-marked quiz grades wait for you to release them. When AI Grade marks a written answer, the student doesn't see the grade until you release it. Quizzes marked only against your answer key show at once.

    Checking and releasing grades

At the top of View Results, a line such as 3 graded, not released shows how many AI grades are waiting, with a Release all button. Each student shows Not shown to Ava yet · Release (with their own name), or Shown · Hide once released. Click Release to show one student their grade, or Hide to take it back.

Click Edit grade on an attempt to change any question's points and comment, and the total updates. An uploaded paper quiz has one Score box instead. Until you release it, students see Being checked and "Your teacher is checking your grade." Edits to a grade you've already released show for the student straight away.

If a quiz is sent to Canvas, Canvas gets each grade only after you release it.

    Seeing results

View Results shows how many students attempted the quiz and the class average. Click a student to see each of their answers, marked right or wrong, with the correct answer beside it.

    Paper quizzes

Gave the quiz on paper? Click Upload Paper Quizzes. Use Single Upload to choose a student and upload their sheet, or Bulk Upload to upload a stack at once: the AI reads each student's name and matches it to your class. PDF, Word and image files up to 10 MB work.

Note:A quiz marked only against your answer key shows students their score as soon as they submit. A quiz with written answers shows "Your teacher is checking your grade." until you release the grade.
