Creating an essay assignment and rubric

Write the prompt, build a rubric (or have AI draft one), and publish the essay to a class.

    Updated October 16, 2026

    1. Open Assignments. The Essays tab opens first. Click Create Essay.
    2. Fill in the Title, the Prompt / Instructions and the Class. Add a Due Date if you like.
    3. Build the rubric (below).
    4. Click Save Draft to finish later, or Publish to send it to the class.

    The rubric

A rubric is a list of criteria, each with a name (for example "Thesis Statement"), a description and its Max Points. Click Add Criterion to add one. The total points are added up for you.

In a hurry? Click Generate with AI and the AI drafts 4 to 6 criteria worth 100 points in total, based on your title and prompt. It replaces any criteria you already have, so generate first, then edit.

Tip:Clear descriptions make better AI grading. "Thesis is clear, arguable and previews the main points" works much better than "Good thesis".

    Starting from a file

Already have the assignment on paper? Use Import from file to upload a photo, PDF or text file of it. The AI fills in the title, prompt and rubric for you to check.

Note:You need at least one rubric criterion to publish. The due date is shown to students, but they can still submit after it.
