    Using TeachFlow with Canvas

Link a Canvas course to a TeachFlow class, add quizzes and essays as Canvas assignments, and send grades to the Canvas gradebook. Includes admin setup.

    Updated October 19, 2026

Your school's Canvas admin adds TeachFlow to Canvas once. After that, you open TeachFlow from a Canvas course, link the course to a TeachFlow class, and put TeachFlow quizzes and essays into Canvas as assignments. Students do them right in Canvas, with no TeachFlow account, and their grades go to the Canvas gradebook.

Tip:Don't see TeachFlow in your Canvas course menu? Your Canvas admin hasn't added it yet. On Integrations, the Canvas card has Send setup steps to your admin, which opens an email with the steps.

    Linking a Canvas course

    1. Open your Canvas course and click TeachFlow in the course menu.
    2. The first time, TeachFlow asks you to confirm it's you. Click Send code, and TeachFlow emails a 6-digit code to your Canvas email address. Type it in. If your TeachFlow account uses a different address, click Use a different email. If you don't have a TeachFlow account yet, this makes you a free one.
    3. Choose Make a new TeachFlow class, which is named after the course and gets its students, or Use a class I already have and pick one.
    4. Click Link course.

From then on, opening TeachFlow from the course shows the linked class with Open TeachFlow, Make a quiz and Make an essay. New students in Canvas are added to your class each time you open TeachFlow from the course.

To stop, click Unlink in the course, or on the Canvas card on the Integrations page. TeachFlow stops adding assignments and sending grades to that course. Your class and students stay in TeachFlow, and anything already in Canvas stays there.

Note:One teacher links each Canvas course. A co-teacher who opens TeachFlow from it sees whose TeachFlow class it's linked to, and only that teacher can manage it for now. TAs, designers and observers see a short message that TeachFlow in Canvas is for the course's teacher and students for now.

Adding quizzes and essays to Canvas

There are two ways to make a Canvas assignment from a TeachFlow quiz or essay. Either way, the points come from TeachFlow.

    • From TeachFlow: on Quizzes or Essays, open the ⋮ menu on a quiz or essay and choose Send to Canvas. If its class is linked to one Canvas course, it's added straight away. If the class is linked to several, tick the courses you want. A draft is published as it's sent, and the message tells you. Sending the same one to the same course again says Already in Canvas, unless it was deleted in Canvas: then it's added again.
    • From Canvas: make a new assignment, choose External tool as the submission type, click Find and pick TeachFlow. Choose the Quizzes or Essays tab, pick one and click Add to Canvas. If the course isn't linked yet, TeachFlow asks you to link it first.

Students open the assignment in Canvas and take the quiz or write the essay right there. For an essay they can also upload a photo or PDF. After they turn it in, Canvas shows it as submitted. When it's graded and the student is allowed to see it, opening the assignment again shows their score and TeachFlow's feedback.

    Grades

Grades go to the Canvas gradebook on their own, at the moment the student can see them in TeachFlow.

    • Quizzes: once the student's attempt is graded, for example with AI Grade.
    • Essays: once you release the grade. If you re-grade with AI, Canvas keeps the last grade you released until you release the new one.

On a quiz's results and an essay's submissions, a label beside each student shows where their grade is: Turned in to Canvas (submitted, no score yet), In Canvas, Goes to Canvas when released (an essay waiting for you to release it) or Couldn't send to Canvas. Point at that last one to see why, then click Retry.

    For Canvas admins

Adding TeachFlow takes about five minutes and is free. Teachers use their own TeachFlow plan. You add it once for the whole school or district, and it works with Canvas by Instructure, including your school's test and beta Canvas.

    1. In Canvas, go to Admin, choose your account, then Apps.
    2. Add an app and paste this link: https://teachflow.ai/lti/register
    3. TeachFlow's page opens inside Canvas and lists what it will be able to do. Click Add TeachFlow.
    4. Canvas shows its own review. Review what TeachFlow can see, then install it.

You can also copy the link from teachflow.ai/canvas.

    What TeachFlow sees:

    • Names and emails in the courses that use it
    • The course roster
